People would argue that because her outfit is very clearly inspired by drag that she’s trying to express gender identity through clothing, I disagree as every outfit she where’s is ‘outrageous’ or ‘extravagant’ so the styling in this image is nothing new to her. Styling wise I don’t think Anna Piaggi is trying to explore or convey any themes. I mentioned before that the image gave me drag queen vibes but I won’t explore these themes as I want the focus to be on the topic of youth. I want my double page spread to explore the themes and emotions of being young and the troubles that come with being young. I feel like this relates in a way to the original image as I think it’s very outdated and old, I want to modernise it, give it a meaning and style and pose the model how I think it should of been done in the original image. Because I spoke about how the comparison images are more modern I’d like to explore the themes of youth. For my double page spread I want to kind of recreate this image but make it more like the images I chose to compare it with. I don’t relate to this image either, there’s no context, expression or emotion. I feel like this image doesn’t have a deeper meaning and I don’t think there’s any sort of topic it’s trying to challenge. I mostly chose colour images to compare with the original image to get a modern perspective. If you use black and white it still looks like Hollywood drag queen glamour but just a bit more vintage. I also feel black and white or colour doesn’t really make a difference on how good a photo looks on this kind of styling. All three images are in colour I’m indecisive wether it’s not to use colour or not in my double page spread. I feel like the vibes in these images is the vibes Anna and Alfa where going for but failed. In these images you can see mostly drag queens, they’re wearing similar clothing to Anna and have similar hair styles and makes up. I feel like the original image they tried to make it glam but missed a lot of key features. I want to recreate the original image but use inspiration from these images and in a way modernise the original image of Anna. They’re posing correctly and interacting with any props they have in shot. I think these images give the same vibes as the original however they have more personality than the original. Here are some images I think could compare with Alfa’s image: This image also makes me feel very underwhelmed again cuz I feel like more could be done with it. I feel like her outfit is very drag inspired and deserves better posing and props. But the props and location used doesnt give me that vibe like the clothes do, the props and location suggest theres a minimalistic 70’s mod what owns a moped leaving there. The props do not match the outfit either, Anna’s outfit would suggest shes wealthy and would have tiger skin carpets, rococco esk furniture and would pose like she just inherited millions from a husband she may or may not have killed. She should be sitting on the chair leaning across the table smoking a cigarette with one of those long cigarette holders. I think what would make me like this image more is if Anna was interacting with the props or doing something other than just standing there. Its very chaotic minimalist, i feel like the two styles don’t mix well but then I also love the drag queen/cruella deville vibes the image gives me. I like this image but at the same time I don’t. This photo was taken by Alfa castaldi, the image looks quite good quality so the camera that was used was probably also of high quality. The look is completed with checker board gloves. Anna is wearing a long possibly black dress with light puffy sleeves, her dress also has a high ‘vampire like’ collar. The furniture has that 70’s abstract style suggesting that it was out dated for the time. Anna is standing behind the props and isn’t interacting with them, this also gives the image a less “life like” effect. The image is rather flat as it has no shadows therefore it loses the 3D effect. Anna is seen wearing a big wig mostly seen on old school drag queens and pantomime daines. The image is in black and white and is most likely film as it was taken in the 1980’s. This image contains Anna Piaggi standing stiffly in a room with a carpet, a chair and a table, with minimalist plants in a small glass vase. She also had a film about her life and works called Anna Piaggi: Una Visionaria della Moda. In the expressed her artistic flair in a montage of images and text. She workede 80’s she designed double page spreads in Vogue Italia, where sh as a translator for an Italian publishing company Mondadori, then wrote for multiple fashion magazines such as Italian Vogue and Vanity. She was born 22nd March 1931 making her an Aries like me. She was known for her extravagant style, bright coloured hair and heavy makeup. Anna Maria Piaggi was an Italian fashion writer and style icon.
